What Units 3 and 4 cover

Under the 2025 syllabus, Unit 3 covers differentiation of exponential, logarithmic and trigonometric functions, further applications of differentiation, an introduction to integration and discrete random variables. Unit 4 covers further integration, trigonometry, continuous random variables and the normal distribution, sampling and proportions, and interval estimates for proportions.

How it is assessed

Three internal assessments make up 50%: IA1, a problem-solving and modelling task (20%), written up to 10 A4 pages or 2000 words; IA2, a 90-minute short-response exam on three of the five Unit 3 topics (15%); and IA3, a short-response exam on Unit 4 (15%). Technology is required in the internal exams.

The external exam (50%) has two 90-minute papers, each with 5 minutes' perusal. Paper 1 is technology-free; in Paper 2 students may use a QCAA-approved graphics calculator without CAS and/or a scientific calculator. The QCAA formula book is provided. In 2026 both papers are on Friday 13 November.

Where marks are lost
