The IB in Dubai's schools
Dubai's private schools teach many curricula. In 2024-25, 7% of their pupils followed the IB and another 4% a UK/IB hybrid, which usually means IGCSEs to Year 11 followed by the IB Diploma in the sixth form. That hybrid route is common, so many of the Dubai students we teach meet the Diploma straight after IGCSE.
From IGCSE to the Diploma: what changes
IGCSE rewards accurate recall and exam technique on a fixed syllabus. The Diploma adds internal assessments marked against criteria, extended writing in every subject and a much steeper step in HL Maths and the sciences. Students who arrive from IGCSE usually need help in three places:
- โ Algebra and functions for HL Maths, which assumes fluency from the first week
- โ Writing to criteria: IAs and essays are marked against markbands, not point by point
- โ Managing six subjects alongside the Extended Essay, TOK and CAS
The points that matter
The Diploma needs at least 24 of 45 points plus the other conditions in the table below, and in May 2026 the global average was 30.88 points. For Dubai students applying to UK universities, schools send predicted IB scores with the application in the autumn of DP2, so DP1 school exams carry real weight.

A DP1 year for a student joining from IGCSE

Weekday sessions usually run between 4pm and 9pm Gulf Standard Time, with weekend slots too. Most students keep the same weekly slot through the term.
