How it is assessed
For 2027, all candidates take Paper 1, Poetry and Prose (1 hour 30 minutes, 50 marks, 50%). They then take either Paper 2, Drama (1 hour 30 minutes, 50 marks, 50%), or Paper 3, Drama Open Text (45 minutes, 25%), with either Paper 4, Unseen (1 hour 15 minutes, 25%), or Component 5, a coursework portfolio of two assignments (25%).
Set texts change by series, so check the texts your child's school has chosen.
Where marks are lost
Marked papers show the same patterns year after year:
- โ Essays that retell the plot
- โ Quotations without analysis of language
- โ Answers that drift from the question
- โ Unseen commentaries without a clear line of argument
- โ Timing across two essays
