Leaving Cert Chemistry grinds
Chemistry rewards students who can do the calculations quickly and accurately: moles, concentrations, titrations and equilibrium all carry heavy marks. Our tutors drill the maths of chemistry and the redeveloped course's new investigation.

Chemistry from 2027
Students who began fifth year in September 2025 are the first to take the redeveloped course: a 2 hour 30 minute written paper worth 60% (300 marks) and an additional assessment component worth 40%, completed during sixth year and submitted to the State Examinations Commission.
The SEC published two Higher and two Ordinary Level sample papers for the new written exam; no marking schemes came with them, so tutors mark sample-paper answers against the specification's learning outcomes.
Why calculations decide the grade
Almost every long question includes a calculation, and errors cascade: a wrong number of moles in part (a) makes every later part wrong. Students who set out working clearly (formula, substitution, units) keep the method marks even when they slip.
- ✓ Mole and mass conversions, and limiting reagents
- ✓ Concentration in mol/L, g/L and parts per million
- ✓ Titration calculations and percentage purity
- ✓ Equilibrium constants and pH
How our Chemistry grinds work
Sessions alternate between a calculation type and a topic, with one timed question set as homework and marked at the start of the next session. For the investigation, tutors teach planning, safety and data analysis; the work itself stays the student's own.
Higher or Ordinary Level?
The deciding factor is usually calculations. Students who can do mole and concentration problems reliably by Christmas of sixth year tend to do well at Higher Level; students who can't often lose a whole long question to one early mistake. A few weeks of focused calculation practice before the mocks gives a much clearer picture than a decision made in fifth year.

Common questions
Is Leaving Cert Chemistry changing?+
Yes. From the June 2027 exam, a 2h30 written paper is worth 60% and an investigation 40%.
Are there marking schemes for the new sample papers?+
Not with the SEC's sample papers. Tutors mark against the specification's learning outcomes.
What are the hardest calculations?+
Usually equilibrium constants, titrations with dilution steps and limiting-reagent problems.
Do I need Higher Level maths for Chemistry?+
No, but confident algebra and rearranging formulas make the calculations much faster.
Can grinds help with the investigation?+
Yes, with planning and data-analysis skills; the investigation and report must be your own work.
Is Chemistry worth taking for CAO points?+
It's a strong points subject for students who are good at maths, and required for many science and health courses.
