HKDSE vs IB: which suits your child?
7 min read ยท updated 2026-10-16
The HKDSE is Hong Kong's own school-leaving exam; the IB Diploma is an international programme taught at many of the city's international and some local schools. Both open doors to Hong Kong and overseas universities, but they're built differently.
How they're structured
- โ HKDSE: core subjects (Chinese, English, Maths and Citizenship and Social Development) plus elective subjects, examined at the end of S6
- โ HKDSE grades run from Level 1 to Level 5**, with 5** the highest
- โ IB Diploma: six subjects, usually three at Higher Level and three at Standard Level, plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and CAS
- โ IB subjects are graded 1-7, with up to 3 core points, for a maximum of 45; the Diploma needs at least 24 points and the core conditions
Workload
The DSE concentrates on end-of-course exams in a smaller number of subjects. The IB spreads assessment between coursework (internal assessments, the Extended Essay and TOK) and final exams, which suits students who keep steady deadlines across two years.
Hong Kong universities
HKDSE students apply through JUPAS. IB Diploma students apply through each university's Non-JUPAS route; CUHK, for example, sets a general IB minimum of 30 points, with programme-specific subject preferences. Local applicants can use one route or the other in an admissions year, not both.
UK and other universities
UK universities accept both. In the UCAS Tariff, HKDSE Level 5** in a Category A subject earns 56 points, the same as an A* at A-Level, according to the HKEAA. The IB is recognised worldwide, and many US and UK universities publish IB-specific offers.

56 points for Category A subjects, the same as an A* at A-Level, according to the HKEAA.

Not to the same university in the same year; choose one route.
