How the MYP is structured
The Middle Years Programme is a five-year programme for students aged about 11 to 16. Students study eight subject groups: language and literature, language acquisition, individuals and societies, sciences, mathematics, arts, physical and health education, and design. In the final year every student completes the Personal Project, an extended independent project on a topic of their choice.
Schools decide how they run the programme, including whether students sit the IB's optional eAssessment at the end of MYP 5, so it is worth checking how your child's school handles the final two years.
Grades come from criteria, not percentages
Each subject group is assessed against four criteria, A to D, each marked from 0 to 8 using published level descriptors. The criteria differ by subject. In mathematics they are knowing and understanding, investigating patterns, communicating, and applying mathematics in real-life contexts; in individuals and societies, knowing and understanding, investigating, communicating and thinking critically.
The four scores are added to a total out of 32 and converted into a final grade from 1 to 7. A student who knows the content but misses what a criterion asks for, such as evaluating a method or justifying a conclusion, can lose a whole grade, which is why our tutors teach to the descriptors.
eAssessment and the IB MYP certificate
Schools that register for eAssessment enter MYP 5 students for on-screen exams and ePortfolios in the May or November session. To earn the IB MYP certificate, a student completes eight eAssessments: on-screen exams in language and literature, individuals and societies, sciences, mathematics and an interdisciplinary exam; an assessment in language acquisition; an ePortfolio in arts, design or physical and health education; and the Personal Project.
The certificate needs at least 28 of the 56 available points, with a grade of 3 or more in every component.

How does MYP grading work?＋
Each subject group is assessed against four criteria (A to D), each scored 0-8; in individuals and societies, for example, they are knowing and understanding, investigating, communicating and thinking critically. The four scores make a total out of 32, which converts to a final grade from 1 to 7. Because every criterion has published level descriptors, tutoring targets the exact descriptor your child is currently missing.
What is a good MYP grade?＋
A 7 is the top of the scale and 4 is a pass band; competitive Diploma Programme entry usually wants 5s and 6s across the board. Grades move fastest in criteria B and D, where structured method and critical thinking are taught skills rather than talent.
My child understands the work but scores low on criteria. Why?＋
MYP marks against published criteria (A through D per subject) that reward specific command terms and process, not just answers. Tutors who teach to the criteria - what 'evaluate' or 'justify' must look like at each level - usually move grades fastest.
Does MYP tutoring help with the Diploma later?＋
Directly. The MYP's final years overlap DP foundations, and students who shore up maths and sciences in MYP 4-5 walk into subject selection and the DP with far more options open.
What is the MYP Personal Project?＋
An independent project completed in the final year of the MYP. Students set a goal, plan and carry it out, and write a report assessed against published criteria. Tutors can coach planning, research and reflection, but the project and the report must be the student's own.
Is MYP eAssessment compulsory?＋
No. Schools decide whether to register for it. Only students at schools that take part can earn the IB MYP certificate; others receive their school's own MYP grades.
Which MYP subjects matter most for the Diploma?＋
Mathematics and the sciences, because HL Maths and the HL sciences assume secure MYP 4-5 foundations. Students aiming at HL in those subjects gain most from closing gaps before DP1 starts.
