How it is assessed

The current HSC Biology exam is 3 hours, worth 100 marks: 20 multiple-choice marks and 80 marks of short and extended responses across Modules 5 to 8.

NSW has released new 11-12 science syllabuses (2025); check with your child's school which syllabus their HSC year follows.

Scaling and the ATAR

In the 2025 HSC, 20,710 students completed Biology, with a mean HSC mark of 36.7 and a mean scaled mark of 26.2 out of 50. High marks still matter: the 90th percentile scaled mark was 39.9.
