What MDM4U covers
The Ontario curriculum sets five strands: Counting and Probability, Probability Distributions, Organization of Data for Analysis, Statistical Analysis, and a Culminating Data Management Investigation. The prerequisite is Grade 11 Functions (MCR3U) or Functions and Applications (MCF3M).
The culminating investigation
Students choose a question, collect or find data, analyse it and present conclusions with a critique of their own process. Many schools count it within the 30% final evaluation, so a weak project can cost more than a weak test.
- ✓ Choosing a question that the available data can actually answer
- ✓ Sampling and sources of bias
- ✓ Choosing the right graphs and statistics
- ✓ Writing a conclusion and critique that use the evidence
How the course is marked
In every Ontario Grade 12 course, 70% of the final mark comes from evaluations through the semester and 30% from a final evaluation, which can be an exam, a culminating task or both. Universities see the final percentage, so steady unit-test marks matter as much as the exam.
