Ontario Grade 12 - University preparation

MCV4U Calculus and Vectors tutoring

MCV4U is the Ontario course for students heading into science, engineering, economics and some business programs, and the closest thing in high school to first-year university calculus. Our tutors teach the ideas behind the rules, so derivatives, optimization and vectors make sense rather than being memorised.

What MCV4U covers

The course has three strands: Rate of Change, Derivatives and Their Applications, and Geometry and Algebra of Vectors. Advanced Functions (MHF4U) must be taken before or at the same time.

The curriculum describes it as the course for students heading to university calculus, linear algebra or physics, which is why it appears in engineering and science admission requirements.

How the course is marked

In every Ontario Grade 12 course, 70% of the final mark comes from evaluations through the semester and 30% from a final evaluation, which can be an exam, a culminating task or both. Universities see the final percentage, so steady unit-test marks matter as much as the exam.

Taking MCV4U alongside MHF4U

Many schools run MHF4U in first semester and MCV4U in second. Students who take both together, or who start MCV4U with weak function skills, find the calculus unit hardest. Sessions keep both courses moving and close function gaps as they appear.

A semester with MCV4U

  1. 1

    Before the course

Secure MHF4U skills: rational functions, logarithms, trigonometry.

  2. 2

    Calculus units

Derivative rules to fluency, then curve sketching and optimization.

  3. 3

    Vectors units

Visualising 3D: lines, planes and intersections with many worked examples.

  4. 4

    Final 3 weeks

Timed mixed practice and a full mock exam.

Common questions

Can I take MCV4U without MHF4U?+

Not without taking MHF4U at the same time; the curriculum requires it before or concurrently.

Which programs require MCV4U?+

Engineering and most mathematics, computer science and physical science programs, and many economics and business programs. Check each university's requirements.

Is MCV4U harder than MHF4U?+

Most students find it harder because it uses every function skill from MHF4U and adds 3D vectors.

How much is the MCV4U exam worth?+

The final evaluation is 30% of the course mark.

Do you tutor the vectors unit too?+

Yes. Vectors, lines and planes are a full strand of the course and often the weakest for students.
