PSAT/NMSQT 2026 guide for parents

Many Grade 10-11 students sit the PSAT/NMSQT in October through school. It is useful practice for the Digital SAT and, for high scorers in Grade 11, the National Merit pathway.
When it happens
For fall 2026, College Board lists an in-school window of 1-30 October for SAT School Day, PSAT/NMSQT and PSAT 8/9. Schools pick the exact day. Parents usually do not register on College Board; the school handles it.
How it helps SAT prep
The PSAT uses the same digital adaptive family as the SAT, on a slightly different scale. A weak PSAT section is a clear signal for autumn SAT tutoring focus. Students aiming for December SAT often start Standard prep in September using PSAT results as the diagnostic.

Do colleges see the PSAT?＋
Colleges do not use PSAT scores for admission the way they use SAT/ACT. The main stakes are practice and, for juniors, National Merit eligibility.
