The PSAT/NMSQT is a practice SAT and the qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship Program. Here is how to read the scores and when they arrive.
The numbers on the report
- โ Reading and Writing: 160 to 760
- โ Math: 160 to 760
- โ Total: 320 to 1520
- โ Selection Index: (2 x Reading and Writing + Math) / 10, from 48 to 228, used for National Merit
When fall 2026 scores arrive
For in-school testing, release dates depend on when the school submits answers: answers submitted by October 9, 2026 bring scores on October 22; by October 23, on November 5; and by October 30, on November 12.

Use the question-level feedback to find the skills that cost the most points, then plan SAT preparation around them. The PSAT is a good predictor of a first SAT score.
