NCEA — the National Certificate of Educational Achievement — is how New Zealand's secondary students earn their school-leaving qualification. It works differently from nearly every other system: credits accumulate all year, assessments come in two flavours, and the strategy matters as much as the study.
Levels, credits and endorsements
Students work through NCEA Levels 1, 2 and 3, typically one level per year in Years 11-13. Each standard passed is worth credits (usually 3-6), and 60 credits at a level (with 10 literacy and 10 numeracy credits from earlier) earns the certificate. Achieving credits at Merit or Excellence quality across the year earns endorsements - the decorations universities and scholarships actually notice.
Internals vs externals
Internal assessments are marked by teachers through the year (projects, essays, portfolios); externals are national exams sat in November. The split means the NCEA year is a marathon of deadlines, not one final sprint. Students who treat every internal as exam-day serious protect their credits early; students who leave it to November discover that some subjects are majority-internals and too much weight was never recoverable.
University Entrance
University Entrance requires NCEA Level 3 plus specific approved-subject credits and literacy/numeracy. Because approved subjects and credit counts matter, subject selection at the start of Year 12 shapes options at 18 - and steady tutoring through internals is the most reliable way to keep every door open.

Level 3 with Merit or Excellence endorsement is the strong outcome most universities and scholarship committees look for. Because endorsements require consistency across the year, the students who achieve them planned credits early rather than rescuing grades late.
Can a failed internal assessment be retried?＋
Often a further opportunity or resubmission exists within the school's rules, but it is not guaranteed and resubmissions cap at the achieved level. The safer strategy is tutor-supported preparation before each internal, which is how most Merit and Excellence credits are actually earned.
