New Zealand - NCEA Levels 1-3

NCEA maths tutoring

NCEA maths is won in two places: internals during the year and externals in November. Our tutors plan both, from Level 1 Mathematics and Statistics to Level 3 Calculus, in New Zealand after-school hours.

Level 1 Mathematics and Statistics

Since 2024 each Level 1 subject has four standards worth 20 credits, two internal and two external. In maths the internals are 91944 (explore data using a statistical enquiry process) and 91945 (use mathematical methods to explore problems relating to life in Aotearoa New Zealand or the Pacific). The externals are 91946 (interpret and apply mathematical and statistical information in context) and 91947 (demonstrate mathematical reasoning). Each is worth 5 credits.

Levels 2 and 3

Levels 2 and 3 still use the existing standards. The Level 2 externals examined in 2025 were 91261 algebraic methods (4 credits), 91262 calculus methods (5 credits) and 91267 probability methods (4 credits). Level 3 Calculus has three externals: 91577 complex numbers (5 credits), 91578 differentiation (6 credits) and 91579 integration (6 credits).

A course is endorsed with Merit or Excellence when a student gains 14 or more credits at that grade in one year, including at least 3 credits from internal and 3 from external standards. A certificate is endorsed when 50 credits are at Merit or Excellence at that level or above. Externals therefore matter even for strong internal students.

NCEA is changing

NCEA is being replaced: a Foundational Award for Year 11 starts in 2028, the New Zealand Certificate of Education (NZCE) for Year 12 in 2029 and the New Zealand Advanced Certificate of Education (NZACE) for Year 13 in 2030. Students in Year 11 in 2027 or above finish on NCEA, so this year's Levels 1 to 3 still count in full.

An NCEA maths year

  1. 1

    Terms 1-2

Internals first: plan each one and practise the method before the assessment.

  2. 2

    Term 3

External topics in depth; first past papers untimed.

  3. 3

    Term 4 to November

Timed NZQA past papers, aiming for Merit and Excellence answers.

  4. 4

    Exam weeks

One paper per day before each external and review of errors.

Two internals (91944 and 91945) and two externals (91946 and 91947), each worth 5 credits.

Which Level 3 Calculus standards are external?+

91577 complex numbers (5 credits), 91578 differentiation (6 credits) and 91579 integration (6 credits).

How do I get a Merit or Excellence course endorsement?+

14 or more credits at that grade in one year, with at least 3 credits from internals and 3 from externals.

When are NCEA maths exams in 2026?+

Within the external exam period from 10 November to 4 December 2026. Check the NZQA timetable for each standard.

Is NCEA still running?+
