What is the SSAT?

The SSAT (Secondary School Admission Test) is the entrance exam for many US private and independent schools. It is a different test from the SAT and ISEE, with its own format and scoring.
Format and levels
- ✓ Elementary Level: for grades 3-4 entry
- ✓ Middle Level: for grades 5-7 entry
- ✓ Upper Level: for grades 8-11 entry
- ✓ Sections: Quantitative (maths), Reading, Verbal, plus an unscored writing sample
Scoring and how it compares
SSAT scores are scaled differently from the SAT and there is no penalty for wrong answers, so students should answer every question. The writing sample is sent to schools unscored as a writing sample. The SSAT tests similar skills to the ISEE but with different question styles and timing.
