ISEE vs SSAT
6 min read ยท updated 2026-10-02
Many independent schools accept either the ISEE or the SSAT. If yours do, the choice comes down to which format suits your child.
The main differences
- โ Verbal: the SSAT uses synonyms and analogies; the ISEE uses synonyms and sentence completion
- โ Maths: the ISEE splits quantitative reasoning from mathematics achievement; the SSAT has two quantitative sections
- โ Scoring: SSAT Upper Level sections are reported from 500 to 800 (total 1500-2400) with percentiles; the ISEE reports scaled scores, percentiles and stanines
- โ Retakes: the ISEE allows one test per season, up to three a year; the SSAT offers several Saturday dates and Flex testing
- โ Both include an unscored writing sample sent to schools
How to decide
First check what your target schools accept. If both are accepted, have your child take a timed practice section of each. Students who enjoy analogies and vocabulary often prefer the SSAT; students who are strong at school maths and reading often prefer the ISEE.
