How AP scores are made
Most AP exams have a multiple-choice section and a free-response section. The raw scores are combined, using the section weights in each course's Course and Exam Description, into a composite score, and College Board converts that composite to the 1-5 scale. The cut-off points are set for each exam each year and aren't published.
What each AP score means
College Board's own description of each score:
- โ 5: extremely well qualified
- โ 4: very well qualified
- โ 3: qualified
- โ 2: possibly qualified
- โ 1: no recommendation

What this calculator can and can't do
It shows where a score sits among the students who took that exam in 2026, which is what a percentile tells you. It can't predict your score from a practice test, because the raw-score cut-offs for current exams aren't public; converters that claim to do this use old released exams or guesswork.
- โ Use it to set a realistic target: in AP Biology, a 4 or 5 put a student in the top 40% in 2026
- โ Use it to compare exams: the share of 5s ranged from 7% (3-D Art and Design) to 48% (Chinese Language and Culture)
- โ Check credit with each college: policies differ by college and by exam
