How A-Level History is assessed
AQA A-Level History (7042) has two 2 hour 30 minute exams, each worth 80 marks and 40%, and a historical investigation worth 20%.
The breadth study opens with a compulsory interpretations question (30 marks) and then two essays from three (25 marks each). The depth study opens with a compulsory question on primary or contemporary sources (30 marks), then two essays from three.
The historical investigation
The NEA is a 3,500 to 4,500-word investigation worth 40 marks, marked by teachers and moderated by AQA. Tutors help shape the question, find and weigh sources, and plan the argument; the writing stays your child's own.
