How A-Level Maths is examined
A-Level Maths is examined with three papers of 2 hours, each worth 100 marks, at AQA (7357), Pearson Edexcel (9MA0) and OCR (H240). About two thirds of the marks are pure maths and the rest are statistics and mechanics, and students are expected to know their board's large data set for the statistics questions.
Calculators are allowed on every paper, so questions lean on reasoning, proof and multi-step problem-solving. The real jump from GCSE is the algebra: students who rearrange, factorise and handle indices fluently find calculus and trigonometry far easier.
Cambridge International AS & A Level Mathematics (9709)
Students in the Gulf, Asia and many international schools take Cambridge 9709 instead. It is examined in stages: Pure Mathematics 1 and 3 plus a combination of Mechanics and Probability & Statistics papers, and an AS result can be carried forward to the full A Level. Our tutors teach both routes and plan around the papers your child is sitting.
Where A-Level Maths marks are lost
These are the patterns that cost marks most often on marked past papers:

Common questions
My child got a 6 at GCSE. Is A-Level Maths realistic?＋
With support, often yes, but the plan changes: the first month is spent hardening algebra and GCSE-grade 8 techniques before new content outruns them. We are honest after the first two sessions about the realistic trajectory.
Do you cover statistics and mechanics or just pure?＋
All three strands, matched to your board's papers. Stats and mechanics are where schools compress time at the end of the year, so external pacing there is often where tutoring earns its keep.
Are calculators allowed in A-Level Maths?＋
Yes, on every paper at AQA, Pearson Edexcel and OCR. That is why the questions focus on method, proof and problem-solving rather than arithmetic.
What is the large data set?＋
Each board publishes a real data set that students study during the course. Statistics questions assume familiarity with it, so tutors work through it with your child rather than leaving it to the last month.
