How it is assessed
French B and ab initio are assessed in four equal parts: Paper 1 writing (25%), Paper 2 listening (25%), Paper 2 reading (25%) and the individual oral (25%). HL students write longer texts and discuss a literary extract in the oral.
Where marks are lost
Marked work shows the same patterns year after year:
- ✓ Wrong register or text-type conventions
- ✓ Agreement and tense errors under time pressure
- ✓ Listening detail missed on first hearing
- ✓ Orals without examples or opinions
- ✓ Too little speaking practice
