IB vs CBSE: which suits your child?

8 min read ยท updated 2026-10-13

For Indian families in the Gulf, the choice for the last school years usually comes down to a CBSE school or an IB school. Both lead to good universities. The real difference is which universities, which entrance exams and what kind of work your child will do for two years.

The two systems side by side

  • โœ“ Who runs it: CBSE is India's Central Board of Secondary Education; the IB Diploma is run by the International Baccalaureate, based in Geneva
  • โœ“ Subjects in the final two years: CBSE students usually take five subjects in a stream (science, commerce or humanities), including a language, usually English; IB Diploma students take six subjects, three or four at Higher Level, plus Theory of Knowledge, a 4,000-word Extended Essay and CAS
  • โœ“ Assessment: CBSE relies mainly on the Class 12 board exams, with practicals and internal marks in some subjects; the IB combines final exams with internal assessments that count for 20-30% in most subjects
  • โœ“ Grading: CBSE gives marks and percentages; the IB grades each subject 1-7, for a maximum of 45 points, and the Diploma needs at least 24 plus several other conditions
  • โœ“ Results: CBSE Class 12 results come out in May; IB May-session results come out in early July

Class 10: what changed in CBSE in 2026

From 2026, CBSE Class 10 students sit two board exams. The first, in February, is compulsory, with results in April. The second, in May, is optional and lets students improve up to three subjects among science, mathematics, social science and languages, with results in June. Internal assessment happens once a year.

IB schools don't have a Class 10 board exam of their own. Many teach the IB Middle Years Programme or Cambridge IGCSE in Years 10 and 11 before the Diploma.

Universities in India: JEE, NEET and CUET

The most competitive places in India go through entrance exams run by the National Testing Agency: JEE Main for engineering (with JEE Advanced for the IITs), NEET-UG for medicine and CUET-UG for central universities. These exams follow the Class 11-12 science and maths that CBSE schools teach, so CBSE students prepare for them and their boards at the same time.

IB students can sit the same exams, and Indian universities accept the IB Diploma as an equivalent to Class 12. But the IB syllabus doesn't match the entrance-exam syllabus topic for topic, so IB students usually need extra preparation. Some universities also ask for an equivalence certificate from the Association of Indian Universities, and IIT and NIT admission sets a minimum Class 12 performance, so check how each one treats IB results before choosing.

Universities abroad

Universities in the UK, the US, Canada and Australia accept both. UK universities publish IB points requirements for each course, and CBSE applicants receive percentage-based offers. The IB's Extended Essay and internal assessments give students experience of independent research and extended writing, which many families find useful for applications abroad.

Which is harder?

They are hard in different ways. CBSE's challenge is volume and competition: a large syllabus, high-stakes board exams and, for many students, entrance-exam coaching on top. The IB's challenge is continuous: internal assessment deadlines, the Extended Essay and TOK all fall during the two years, and every subject asks for extended written answers. The global average Diploma score in May 2026 was 30.88 points out of 45.

Who each suits

  • โœ“ CBSE: students aiming for JEE, NEET or CUET in India, families who may move between the Gulf and India, and students who do best with a defined syllabus and exam focus
  • โœ“ IB: students aiming mainly for universities abroad, strong independent writers, and students who like to research and argue rather than memorise
  • โœ“ Either: students heading to the UK, US or Canada with a strong record, since both are well recognised

What about ICSE and Cambridge?

ICSE (Class 10) and ISC (Class 12) are the CISCE board's exams, another Indian route that many families see as heavier in English and literature. Cambridge IGCSE and A Levels, common in Gulf British-curriculum schools, let students specialise in three or four subjects in the final two years, with university offers made on A Level grades.
