How it is assessed

At SL, Paper 1 and Paper 2 are worth 35% each and the internal assessment 30%. At HL, Papers 1 and 2 are 25% each, Paper 3 30% and the IA 20%. Paper 1 lasts 1 hour 30 minutes for 35 marks, with short knowledge and application questions and a 15-mark Concepts in Context essay; HL Paper 3 (1 hour 45 minutes, 30 marks) is built on an unseen study and tests research methods, validity and ethics.

The IA is now a written research proposal of 2,000 to 2,200 words.

Where marks are lost

Marked work shows the same patterns year after year:
