How it is assessed

Language B and ab initio share the same structure: Paper 1 (writing) is 25%, Paper 2 listening 25% and Paper 2 reading 25%, and the individual oral 25%. HL students write longer, more complex texts and discuss a literary extract in the oral.

Where marks are lost

Marked work shows the same patterns year after year:

✓ Limited range of tenses and connectors
✓ Listening answers lost to spelling or detail
✓ Orals that sound memorised and fall apart in discussion
✓ Too little speaking practice between lessons
