How many credits do you need for NCEA?
6 min read · updated 2026-10-13
Each NCEA level needs 60 credits at that level or above, plus the literacy and numeracy co-requisite of 20 credits, which you complete once. The rules changed in 2024: credits no longer carry over from the level below, and older guides that say '80 credits' describe the previous system.
The numbers for each level
- ✓ NCEA Level 1: 60 credits at Level 1 or above, plus the co-requisite
- ✓ NCEA Level 2: 60 credits at Level 2 or above, plus the co-requisite
- ✓ NCEA Level 3: 60 credits at Level 3 or above, plus the co-requisite
- ✓ Co-requisite: 20 credits (10 literacy or te reo matatini, 10 numeracy or pāngarau), completed once and kept for every level
What changed in 2024
Before 2024, each certificate needed 80 credits, and 20 of them could carry over from the level below. That carry-over has ended, so Level 1 credits no longer help with Level 2. Credits from a higher level still count down: Level 3 credits count toward Level 2.
The co-requisite replaced the old literacy and numeracy requirement. Credits used for it don't count toward the 60. Literacy and numeracy achieved before 2024 can still be used until the end of 2026.
Endorsements
A certificate is endorsed with Merit when you have 50 or more credits at Merit or Excellence at that level or above, and with Excellence when 50 or more are at Excellence. NZQA calculates endorsements in January when exam results are released.
A course (subject) is endorsed with 14 or more Merit or Excellence credits in one year, including at least 3 credits from internal and 3 from external standards. That makes the end-of-year exams important even for students with plenty of internal credits.
A worked example
A Year 12 student has 52 credits from Level 2 standards and has already passed a 12-credit Level 3 standard in maths. That is 64 credits at Level 2 or above, so the Level 2 credit requirement is met. If 30 of the Level 2 credits are at Merit and 22 at Excellence, they have 52 at Merit or better, which is enough for a Merit endorsement but not Excellence.
What's next for NCEA
The government has announced a new qualification to replace NCEA over the coming years. Students in senior school now still work toward NCEA under the rules above; see our guide to what is replacing NCEA for the timeline.
