How to raise your SAT Math score

7 min read ยท updated 2026-10-13

SAT Math rewards a few skills used again and again: linear equations, functions, data and some geometry. Because the test is adaptive, accuracy in the first module decides how hard (and how valuable) the second module is.

What's on SAT Math

The Math section has 44 questions in 70 minutes, split into two adaptive modules. College Board's content domains:

  • โœ“ Algebra: 13-15 questions
  • โœ“ Advanced Math: 13-15 questions
  • โœ“ Problem-Solving and Data Analysis: 5-7 questions
  • โœ“ Geometry and Trigonometry: 5-7 questions
  • โœ“ About 30% of questions are set in context, and some need a typed answer rather than multiple choice

The fastest gains

  • โœ“ Algebra and Advanced Math are about 60% of the section: master linear equations, systems, quadratics and functions first
  • โœ“ Use the built-in Desmos calculator to graph systems and quadratics instead of solving by hand
  • โœ“ Be careful in module 1: accuracy there decides how hard module 2 is
  • โœ“ Answer every question: there's no penalty for guessing
  • โœ“ Learn the formulas on the reference sheet and when to use them

A six-week plan

  • โœ“ Week 1: a full Bluebook practice test and an error log by domain
  • โœ“ Weeks 2-3: algebra and advanced math, with Desmos practice
  • โœ“ Week 4: data analysis and geometry
  • โœ“ Weeks 5-6: two more full practice tests and targeted review
