- โ Paper 1, Love through the ages (3 hours, 40%): Shakespeare, unseen poetry, and an essay comparing a prose and a poetry text; open book in Section C only
- โ Paper 2, Texts in shared contexts (2 hours 30 minutes, open book, 40%): WW1 and its aftermath or Modern times, with an unseen prose extract
- โ Non-exam assessment (20%): a 2,500-word comparative essay on two texts, at least one written before 1900
What top grades took in June 2026
The A* boundary for AQA English Literature A was 313 or 320 out of 375, depending on the option; for AQA English Literature B it ranged from 312 to 341 out of 375 by option. Pearson Edexcel's A* was 231 out of 300.
Where marks are lost
- โ Retelling the plot instead of analysing how meaning is made
- โ Context added as a paragraph of history, not tied to the argument
- โ Comparative essays that discuss the texts one after the other
- โ Unseen responses that list techniques without a line of argument
- โ An NEA question too broad to answer well in 2,500 words
