NCEA chemistry tutoring
NCEA chemistry asks students to explain, not just calculate: Excellence answers link observations to particles and bonding in clear sentences. Our tutors teach that writing alongside the content, from Level 1 Chemistry and Biology to Level 3 Chemistry.

Level 1: Chemistry and Biology
At Level 1, chemistry sits inside the subject Chemistry and Biology. Its standards include 92021 (demonstrate understanding of chemical reactions in context, internal, 6 credits) and 92023 (demonstrate understanding of how the physical properties of materials inform their use, external, 4 credits), alongside two biology standards.
Levels 2 and 3
Level 2 and 3 Chemistry use the existing standards, with externals on structure, bonding and energy, organic chemistry, and reactivity or equilibrium. Most marks above Achieved come from explaining why, using the right chemical language.
A course is endorsed with Merit or Excellence when a student gains 14 or more credits at that grade in one year, including at least 3 credits from internal and 3 from external standards. A certificate is endorsed when 50 credits are at Merit or Excellence at that level or above. Externals therefore matter even for strong internal students.
NCEA is changing
NCEA is being replaced: a Foundational Award for Year 11 starts in 2028, the New Zealand Certificate of Education (NZCE) for Year 12 in 2029 and the New Zealand Advanced Certificate of Education (NZACE) for Year 13 in 2030. Students in Year 11 in 2027 or above finish on NCEA, so this year's Levels 1 to 3 still count in full.
