Level 1 English
Level 1 English has two internals, 91924 (how context shapes verbal language use) and 91926 (develop ideas in writing using stylistic and written conventions), and two externals, 91925 (specific aspects of studied text) and 91927 (significant aspects of unfamiliar texts). Each is worth 5 credits.
Levels 2 and 3, and University Entrance
Levels 2 and 3 use the existing standards: essays on studied written and visual or oral texts, and unfamiliar text analysis. For University Entrance, students need 10 literacy credits at Level 2 or above, made up of 5 in reading and 5 in writing, plus NCEA Level 3 with 14 credits in each of 3 approved subjects.
A course is endorsed with Merit or Excellence when a student gains 14 or more credits at that grade in one year, including at least 3 credits from internal and 3 from external standards. A certificate is endorsed when 50 credits are at Merit or Excellence at that level or above. Externals therefore matter even for strong internal students.
NCEA is changing
NCEA is being replaced: a Foundational Award for Year 11 starts in 2028, the New Zealand Certificate of Education (NZCE) for Year 12 in 2029 and the New Zealand Advanced Certificate of Education (NZACE) for Year 13 in 2030. Students in Year 11 in 2027 or above finish on NCEA, so this year's Levels 1 to 3 still count in full.
