IB vs British curriculum in the UAE
7 min read ยท updated 2026-10-13
In Dubai and Abu Dhabi, the British curriculum is the most common choice and the IB is the main alternative, with many schools combining IGCSEs with the IB Diploma. Both lead to strong universities worldwide; the difference is how many subjects a student takes and how they are assessed.
How many pupils take each
KHDA figures for Dubai's private schools in 2024-25:
- โ UK curriculum: 37% of pupils, across 90 British-curriculum schools
- โ IB: 7% of pupils
- โ UK/IB hybrid (usually IGCSE and then the IB Diploma): 4%
The two routes side by side
- โ Ages 14-16: British schools teach GCSEs or IGCSEs, sat at the end of Year 11; IB schools teach the Middle Years Programme, and many hybrid schools teach IGCSEs instead
- โ Ages 16-18: British schools teach A Levels, usually three or four subjects; IB schools teach the Diploma Programme, six subjects plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and CAS
- โ Assessment: A Levels are mostly final exams; the IB adds internal assessments marked by teachers and moderated by the IB in most subjects
- โ Grading: A Levels are graded A* to E; the IB Diploma is scored out of 45, and the global average in May 2026 was 30.88
Breadth or depth
A Levels let students specialise early: three strong subjects for the course they want, which suits students who already know their direction, such as medicine or engineering. The IB keeps maths, a language, a science and a humanity going to 18, which suits all-rounders and students who haven't decided.
University recognition
Both are accepted by universities in the UK, the US, Canada, Australia and the UAE. UK universities set offers in A Level grades (such as AAA) or IB points (such as 36), and US universities look at the whole transcript, with either qualification.
Who each suits
- โ British curriculum: students with clear subject strengths, those aiming at UK universities, and families who may move to the UK
- โ IB: strong all-rounders, independent writers and researchers, and students keeping options open across countries
- โ Hybrid (IGCSE then IB): students who want exam-based IGCSEs at 16 and breadth at 18
