MYP eAssessment explained

6 min read ยท updated 2026-10-13

MYP eAssessment is the IB's optional external assessment at the end of MYP Year 5 (usually Grade 10 or Year 11). Schools choose whether to take part. Students who do sit on-screen exams in some subjects and submit ePortfolios in others, and can earn the IB MYP certificate.

On-screen exams and ePortfolios

  • โœ“ On-screen exams (taken on a computer, usually about two hours): language and literature, language acquisition, individuals and societies, mathematics, sciences, and an interdisciplinary exam
  • โœ“ ePortfolios (coursework marked by the teacher and moderated by the IB): arts, design and physical and health education
  • โœ“ The personal project is also assessed and moderated by the IB
  • โœ“ Sessions run in May and November

How grades work

Every MYP subject is assessed against four criteria (A to D), each with achievement levels up to 8. In the classroom the four levels are added (out of 32) and converted to a grade from 1 to 7. In eAssessment, examiners' marks are converted to grades 1 to 7 using boundaries set for each subject in each session.

The MYP certificate

To earn the certificate, students need results in the required components, a minimum grade in each, an overall points total set by the IB and the school's service requirements. Your school's MYP coordinator confirms the exact rules for your session.

Preparing for the on-screen exams

  • โœ“ Practise with the IB's on-screen specimen exams so the format isn't new on the day
  • โœ“ Learn the command terms (describe, explain, evaluate) and what each criterion rewards
  • โœ“ Time management: on-screen tasks often include video, data and interactive elements
  • โœ“ Mathematics: show working in the response boxes; method earns marks

What each criterion asks for

Criteria differ by subject, but they follow a pattern from knowing to applying to evaluating. In sciences, for example, they cover knowing and understanding, inquiring and designing, processing and evaluating, and reflecting on the impacts of science. Reading the criterion descriptors for levels 7-8 shows exactly what a top answer looks like.

A six-week plan before the on-screen exams

  • โœ“ Weeks 1-2: the IB's specimen on-screen exams, untimed, to learn the format
  • โœ“ Weeks 3-4: past tasks by criterion, with feedback on the level reached
  • โœ“ Weeks 5-6: full timed exams on a computer, as close to the real setting as possible
