The NYC exam ladder

Eight of New York City's nine specialized high schools, including Stuyvesant, Bronx Science and Brooklyn Tech, admit students through the SHSAT; LaGuardia admits by audition. State Regents exams then shape high school, and the SAT and AP exams follow for college. Each is a distinct test with its own strategy, and preparation for one rarely covers the others.

Subjects NYC families request most

SHSAT math and ELA, Regents Algebra, Geometry, Living Environment and Chemistry, SAT Math and Reading and Writing, and AP support for juniors and seniors. Sessions use official practice formats, because pacing is part of every test.

Sessions around NYC schedules

Afternoons 3-9pm Eastern and weekends, with tutors who work Eastern hours. Two free demo classes, then monthly plans, with a weekly progress note to your phone.

The 2026 SHSAT goes computer-adaptive

For fall 2027 admission, SHSAT registration runs from October 6 to October 30, 2026, in MySchools or through your child's school counselor. Students at NYC public middle schools test on School Day, Wednesday, November 18; weekend sittings are on November 14 or 15 and November 21.

From 2026 the SHSAT is computer-adaptive: each question depends on how the student answered the ones before. Offers are made in order of score, combined with the order of schools on the student's registration, so the ranking of schools matters as much as the score.

Regents exams are changing

New York is ending the requirement to pass Regents exams to graduate. From the 2027-28 school year, passing scores will no longer be required for a diploma, and ninth graders who start high school in fall 2027 will be the first to follow the new credit requirements. Students will still take Regents exams in math, English and science because of federal testing rules, so the exams stay on the calendar even as the stakes change.
