Grammar schools near Manchester: the Trafford test
Manchester itself has no state grammar schools, but neighbouring Trafford does. Five of them, Altrincham Grammar School for Boys, Altrincham Grammar School for Girls, Sale Grammar School, Stretford Grammar School and Urmston Grammar School, share one entrance test through the Trafford Grammar School Consortium. For September 2027 entry, the test was set by GL, with two papers of about an hour covering verbal, non-verbal and mathematical skills, and each school's qualifying score was 334.
The test changes for 2028 entry. A new provider, Future Stories Community Enterprise, sets the test sat in September 2027, and it will draw on the Key Stage 2 English and maths curriculum up to the end of Year 5 instead of reasoning papers. Families of children now in Year 5 should prepare for that new format.
GCSEs and A-Levels in 2027
Most Manchester secondaries enter students with AQA or Pearson Edexcel at GCSE. The 2027 exams run through May and June, with A-Level results on 12 August and GCSE results on 19 August 2027. Secondary school applications for September 2027 are due by 31 October 2026, with offers on 1 March 2027.
