Extension 1 is one of the strongest-scaling courses in the HSC, and from the 2027 HSC it follows a new syllabus. Our tutors teach the proof and problem-solving it demands.

How it is assessed
The HSC Mathematics Extension 1 exam is 2 hours plus 10 minutes' reading, worth 70 marks: 10 multiple-choice marks and 60 marks of written questions. Results are reported in bands E1 to E4.
The new syllabus is organised into seven areas of study: functions, proof, vectors, trigonometric functions, combinatorics, calculus and statistical analysis. It is taught to Year 12 from Term 4 2026 and first examined in 2027.
Scaling and the ATAR
In the 2025 HSC, Mathematics Extension 1 had a mean scaled mark of 39.7 out of 50 per unit, among the highest of any large course.
Where marks are lost
The same patterns show up in marked work every year:
- โ Induction proofs with a missing or vague step
- โ Vector questions without clear diagrams
- โ Combinatorics answers that double count
- โ Differential equations set up incorrectly
- โ Proof questions answered with examples instead of reasoning
