How it is assessed

The current HSC Chemistry exam is 3 hours, worth 100 marks: 20 multiple-choice questions (20 marks) and 80 marks of short and extended responses drawn from Modules 5 to 8.

NSW has released new 11-12 science syllabuses (2025); check with your child's school which syllabus their HSC year follows.

Scaling and the ATAR

In the 2025 HSC, Chemistry had a mean HSC mark of 37.6 and a mean scaled mark of 32.0 out of 50.

Where marks are lost

The same patterns show up in marked work every year:
