How it is assessed
The HSC Mathematics Extension 2 exam is 3 hours plus 10 minutes' reading, worth 100 marks: 10 multiple-choice marks and 90 marks of written questions. Results are reported in bands E1 to E4.
The new syllabus covers five areas of study (proof, vectors, complex numbers, calculus and mechanics), is taught to Year 12 from Term 4 2026 and is first examined in 2027.
Scaling and the ATAR
In the 2025 HSC, Mathematics Extension 2 had a mean HSC mark of 41.5 and the highest mean scaled mark of the large courses: 43.4 out of 50 per unit.
Where marks are lost
The same patterns show up in marked work every year:
- โ Proofs that assume what they need to show
- โ Complex number questions without a geometric picture
- โ Integration technique chosen by trial and error
- โ Mechanics problems without a force diagram
- โ Time lost on the hardest part of one question
