How it is assessed
The HSC Mathematics Advanced exam is 3 hours plus 10 minutes' reading, worth 100 marks: 10 multiple-choice marks and 90 marks of written questions. A reference sheet is provided and NESA-approved calculators are allowed. The HSC mark combines the exam with the school's moderated assessment mark, half each.
The new Mathematics Advanced syllabus (2024) is taught to Year 12 from Term 4 2026 and first examined in 2027, so older past papers need checking against the new syllabus.
Scaling and the ATAR
In the 2025 HSC, Mathematics Advanced had a mean HSC mark of 39.6 and a mean scaled mark of 31.9 out of 50, slightly above Chemistry and Physics and well above Mathematics Standard 2 (23.3).
Where marks are lost
The same patterns show up in marked work every year:
- โ Algebra slips inside calculus answers
- โ Working not shown on multi-mark questions
- โ Probability and statistics questions read too quickly
- โ Unfamiliar contexts that hide routine calculus
- โ Running out of time on the final questions
