How it is assessed
The HSC Economics exam is 3 hours plus 5 minutes' reading, worth 100 marks: Section I, 20 objective-response marks; Section II, four short-answer questions worth 40 marks; Section III, one of two stimulus-based extended responses (20 marks); and Section IV, one of two extended responses (20 marks).
Students sitting the 2027 HSC still follow the current Economics syllabus; the new syllabus is first examined in 2028.
Scaling and the ATAR
In the 2025 HSC, Economics had a mean HSC mark of 39.0 and a mean scaled mark of 31.4 out of 50.
Where marks are lost
The same patterns show up in marked work every year:
- โ Extended responses without recent, accurate statistics
- โ Diagrams that are drawn but not explained
- โ Short answers that are too long for the marks
- โ Policy evaluation without weighing effects
- โ Calculation slips in Section II
